11 Athletic Bouldering Exhibit

Originally created as a one-off featured in the 11 Athletic Bouldering Exhibit for Paris Fashion week in 2023, the Athletic Bouldering Climbing Shoe model quickly turned into a house favorite so, naturally, we had to share it with you.

BORIS BIDJAN SABERI

BOULDERING IS FREEDOM. Climbing without ropes or harnesses over rock formations or artificial walls offers unique mental and physical challenges. As a keen climber, Saberi wanted to expand and enhance the apparel possibilities of bouldering. His personal connection with the sport together with his existing partnership with leading mountain sports brand Salomon resulted in a paradigm shift in bouldering style: the Athletic Bouldering FW23 collection. Created in collaboration with legendary climber Fred Nicole and So iLL, the collection brings together technical footwear, clothing and backpacks in a specific design language that both embraces and transcends utilitarianism.

Great shoe but short lived

I had been wearing Katanas for the past 7 years and decided to give these a try when I saw them at a shoe demo. They are super comfortable and very stylish and I really enjoyed them while they lasted, but noticed holes by the toe within only a few months. I got the shoes in late Oct. and by late Feb. the shoes were well beyond being resoled. I kept climbing on them because I’m stubborn but now it is mid-March and they are totally finished. I definitely put mileage into them and maybe I’m just used to stiffer rubber but I was still pretty disappointed in the life of these shoes as I’m not psyched about needing to invest again so soon. Despite really enjoying them I will likely not return for more.

Beyond this though, the tightening strap was way more reliable and convenient than I thought and the flexibility of the shoe backing allowed for a comfortable slipper-mode while belaying or resting. I’d tend to tuck the slack of the tightening strap back into the webbing loop on the top because the strap would otherwise get in the way sometimes. These shoes also didn’t retain odor as stubbornly as the katanas I was used to (though this may also be an effect of their shorter life).

Hey Sean - you're right, these shoes have a very soft rubber and if you're climbing pretty frequently, we'd definitely expect to see the rubber wearing by the time it did. We do recommend getting them getting resoled at the first sign of wear. You're also right in that there is a perforated panel in the shoe that is designed for breathability. Thank you for the review!

after the right fit they are great

I finally found the right fate.I had to go a size and a half up. Normally I am 7.5 W in street shoes and 7 in climbing shoes (la sportiva) but I had to go 1.5 sizes up for equivalent level of fit ( my la sportiva). I am still pondering if I want to go 0.5 size down but 9 is already super tight. Beautifully designed shoes, performance wise TBD. Excellent customer service- thank you, joseph, and michael, for all your help!!! Michaela

Quality - This shoes is built to perform and last

Quality!!!!! This shoes is built to perform and last. I have been climbing in it for 9 months, 3-4 days a week. The toe rubber has just now worn off. By far my favorite all around shoe to date. Keep cooking!!!

Not just performance, it's style is out there. So iLL may very well be the best climbing shoe company on the market.

Most comfortable!

Definitely the most comfortable pair I've tried. Not to mention they are pretty stylish. I fell in love the first time I put them on. No pain points at all! The only point is that they caught some eyes at the gym :)
Will definitely check out the white version in the future

Good

Very nice shoes.Soft, comfortable and easy to wear.I normally wear a size 38 in my Sportiva's, but I bought the US7 and they felt a little big.The sole has a little less friction than the Vibram xs2.The toe could use a little more rubber, but it is sufficient.Best of all, Salomon's lacing system makes them easy to put on and take off, giving them the feel of lace-up shoes. They are reasonably rigid and a very easy pair to use in the gym.
Also cool.

Guaranteed sends!!

I love this shoe! It’s soft where it needs to be and firm in the right spots. Feels great getting on and off. It’s a fantastic climbing shoe!

Great so far!

I've only had the pair for a week or so, on my second wear my feet had gotten much more used to the fit, got my street size and they have a snug fit.

Ninja shoes

The intersection of fashion and function. Got these half a size down and they fit perfect after two ish sessions. The upper toe box rubber is ideal for my toe hooks, and the slightly downwards bent curve was a welcome upgrade after ten years of beginner level shoes. The all black look gets compliments. The lacing system takes a minute but I leave my feet in the shoes the whole session, and demounting them is fast. An absolute joy and pride to use and own.

Pleasantly surprised

Wasn’t sure how I felt about these when I ordered them but let me tell you they fit like a glove. I got my true street size in shoes and they have no dead space with the perfect amount of toe curl. (Quick tip for finding your true shoe size is go to a shoe center and get a digitial scan of your foot quit guessing based of your street shoe. My street shoes are all over the place due to brand size differences. Get the scan find your true size and buy that in here. Don’t down size any SO ILL shoes they don’t stretch like other brands. Use their recommended sizing. ) The toes are responsive and soft. I’m used to a split sole but I really enjoyed the mono it’s soft enough in the center where it still felt like a split sole with a tad bit more stiffness. Getting them on and off the with quick lace system was actually pretty convenient and the break in was smooth.

Slightly looser fit than I'm used to

Love the shoes, previously had evolv phantoms in size 9.5 mens, ordered these in 9.5 as well but the toe doesn't scrunch as much as I was used to. Just a bit of space inside for my toe to pull away from the tip but other than that definitely a great shoe. Though I wear size 10 vans, I would probably get these in size 9 next time.

All round best shoe I had

Let me start with this, one of the most comfortable shoes out of the box that I ever tried. I wasn’t sure about the size but it worked out great. I like the look of the shoe and getting in and out of it doesn’t feel like a struggle for the first time ever haha. Can’t wait to see how they preform in the competitions.
Cheers!

Kinda Perfect (for me)

The Goldilocks bouldering shoe for me.
Just the right balance of athletic softness and aggressive tensioning. I can now bring just one pair of shoes to climb in.
The build quality is top notch.
The lace system is a nice touch for easy on/off.
Durability, we shall see (I generally burn out a pair of shoes in 3 months). I could see them becoming hot during a long summer session because of the tongue material.
Ordered my street shoe size and the fit is fine.
They are a special shoe. Wish I could put a set in a display case.

Hiangle Pro had a baby with evolv Kronos.

May I ask AB1 softer than roam black ?

The So iLL Team

Yes, the AB1 is softer than the Roam Soft (Black) - the AB1 does have a single piece outsole for added stability. Aside from that, the outsole is essentially unstructured (to remain very soft and sensitive)
